Three Days in Lisbon with Peter

April 9-12

Praca do Comercio, the main plaza in "downtown" Lisbon
We needed to see how much we could see before Peter returned to Seattle. Lisbon has a famous tram line, as well as good metro and buses, although someone at the hotel warned me they were always late. We took the tram from this commercial center, Praca do Comercio, to Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a very impressive monument.

Mosteiro dos Jeronimos

Lovely and well-maintained structure
A special place which Simone had told us about is Antiga
Confeitaria de Belem, which invented a special and delicious custard tart imitated all over Lisbon, so, of course, we went there to sample them! OF course, they were really good!!

We ate our pastries in the park.
Then we visited the nearby Berardo Museum of Contemporary Art.

On Friday we did some walking around the neighborhood, as at 3 we would be checking into the flat in Graca I had rented.

We stopped for coffee here.

We visited the modern Gulbenkian Museum and lovely gardens.
Strange but interesting photography show....
Somber moment under the banyan tree in Estrella Park....

Peter found the Aquas Livres Aqueduct which dates back to 1746, so we had walked around there and even up on the roof!

We took a cab to the flat in the popular neighborhood of Graca. The vintage tram line has a stop 5 minutes from the front door. There are points along the route where the driver has to get out and adjust the track so he or she can continue along the tracks. It is a fun way to get around, although at times it gets incredibly crowded!

Peter bought a new hat!

There is great view of the city and the river in Graca, five minutes away where many go at sunset to have a glass of wine and enjoy the vista.

Saturday was Peter's last full day, and it started with a visit to the biggest market in Lisbon just down the hill from where we were staying. It is all STUFF...mostly used, and no food. Peter bought a record to take home with him before we moved on. (I went back last Saturday and had not realized how huge this market was!)

There is a small ferry system here, and we took a ferry over to where we toured the last boat of the Portuguese Navy.

Then we stopped for a late lunch,
and Peter enjoyed the sardines.

...After a pretty busy two weeks Peter went back to Seattle...with many interesting memories of Barcelona, Madeira, and Lisbon....Thanks for coming, Peter!!
