April 6th
Peter's friend Simone invited us to come for a visit, and we were delighted to accept her invite! She and her family moved there from Lisbon about a year ago. She and her husband Julian, as well as vacationing Clyde (11) and Nico (6), were able to spend some time with us, so we had
lovely time!

Walking down their street into the city. |
We had a delightful walk about the city on Monday and took a cab up to a great beef restaurant for lunch, where the beef is brought to the table on skewers. And then we walked down the hill....
Everywhere we walked, there were wonderful shows of all types of flowers and flowering trees!

Peter and I took the bus up into the hills for a very pleasant hike-not too easy and not too hard. (My hikes in the French Pyrenees last August had piqued my interest in hiking like this!) Clyde had warned us it would be windy, but we lucked out, and it was not too bad...a bit overcast.

"Downtown" Funchal waiting for the bus |
For dinner we walked into the Old Town for a delicious fish dinner in a charming, small "Mom and Pop" restaurant. He greeted and managed the small dining room, and she cooked. What a tasty treat!

The six of us took another walk around this interesting city and stopped for lunch at the Hamburger Palace.

No idea what this is sighted on this tree branch! |
"Not so much of a palace," Simone warned us,
but tasty for sure!

Just as good as it looks! |
That was followed by a (nother) gelato! And it was time to leave the wonderful visit with Nico, Clyde, Simone, and Julian for Lisbon!
THANKS so much!! Hope to see you in Boston....
